Think of the fibres catching the dirt in your aquarium. The rings will provide biological filtration. Reducing the amount of filter wool may increase the suspended particles in your tank if you do not ensure that the filter flow does not bypass the material. Consider replacing the filter wool with a cellulose (sponge) media.
