Overstocked and Annoyed....now what? | |
Hari Seldon Hobbyist Posts: 87 Kudos: 40 Registered: 24-Aug-2007 | Ok...so a while ago (2 years?) I bought this tank for my daughter...I was under the impression it was a 14 gallon tank. This was my first ever tank, I had guppies and a cory and things were great. This lead me to getting my 72G cichlid tank. So I am looking around the LFS for some new fish for my "14G tank", and I notice that the 5-7G tanks look comparable to my 14G, and the 10-14Gs look WAY bigger and are more expensive. That's when I realized I don't have a 14G!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Most likely its a 7G tank (I can't find reference to it on the internet, but its made by Marina and has an orange canopy). So know I am stuck with 2 Smiling Acara's, 7 neons and 2 apple snails in a 7G!! Guess I need to clear up some room - can I keep the Acara's in there? I've read that I should have at least 10-15G tank for the Acara's....so I am thinking they have to go. So now I think I have an over-glorified (well planted) betta tank - no fun. 72G Bowfront. 1 Sunshine Peacock, 2 Yellow Labs, 1 Ps. Elongatus, 1 Blue Ahli, 1 Red Kadanga, 1 Mel. Exasperatus, 1 metriaclima emmiltos, 1 Ancistrus. 14.5G 4 Neon Tetras. |

I see you have answered your own question. You could also make it a Neon tank and may be a few shrimps Also remember that 7Gal is an empty tank when you add the substrate and any thing else in the tank it could easily be a lower capacity. What you can easily do at the next water change take out all the fish and snails and as much water as possible then measure the water as you replace it. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Hari Seldon Hobbyist Posts: 87 Kudos: 40 Registered: 24-Aug-2007 | Thanks guys. I haven't had the Acara's in there for more than a week, things are fine now, but I know that I have to change it up. I am not fond of the idea of just a neon tank...I like fish with some personality, not just the colour - and since there is little to no room for schooling behaviour, the neons will go (my niece just got a 10G - and she wants neons, so I will give them to her). I'll probably just return the Acara's to the LFS - any ideas on what else I can stock in this tank other than a betta? Aquasacaping = 6 inch piece of drift wood, a 6 inch anubius, some smooth oval rocks, gravel substrate and a bunch of free growing mayaca (or something that looks very similar) 72G Bowfront. 1 Sunshine Peacock, 2 Yellow Labs, 1 Ps. And you will need to keep up with water changes because these guys are relatively sensitive. Or you could have just a pair of licorice or sparkling gouramis, if you can find them. ><> |

Hari Seldon Hobbyist Posts: 87 Kudos: 40 Registered: 24-Aug-2007 | Just as an update....the Acara's seem to be doing well. I don't see any typical stress signs - they are eating well, swimming well, seem alert are constantly 'grazing' on my plants (nibbling, no real damage) and are not stressing each other out. I am thinking I'll remove 4 neons, and keep the tank stocked with 3 neons and 2 acara's - given that the Acara's are 2-3 inches, they seem to be comfortable in the tank. Weekly water changes will be performed. I'll see how this goes. 72G Bowfront. 1 Sunshine Peacock, 2 Yellow Labs, 1 Ps. Elongatus, 1 Blue Ahli, 1 Red Kadanga, 1 Mel.
