I have my 30 gallon, moderately planted, tank near a narrow pathway to my kitchen. As a result, the fish gets spooked everytime some walks by. This tank is new, only 1 month old, and I was wondering if the fishes will adapt to the movement of people passing by. Are the fish getting too much stress because people walk by?

Mine has been near a doorway for over a year. They still get startled on occaision. I don't think it would do anything long-term.

My Silver Sharks will often go into a fast frenzy if a come to close suddenly at night their lights out.

I think It could depend on the fish, Also are they getting a virbration through the floor/stand. If this is the case add some thick base under the tank and tank stand.

Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do.

Your fishes are less likely to get spooked if they are in a bigger tank. I use 125 gallon tanks in high traffic areas with no problems. The type of fish comes into play as well. African cichlids hide everytime something in the room comes close. Guppies, or mollies would be more likely to swim up and meet you at the tank instead of hiding. So what is in your 30 gallon? Can you find a corner with less traffic? If you only approach the tank very slowly at feeding time, you will see improvement!

My stock list are (right in my signature area ):

30 Gallon (36L, 12W, 16H)

-6 Cardinal Tetras
-6 Leopard Cories
-3 Dwarf Gouramis
-2 Bolivian Rams
-4 Amano Shrimps

On the corner closest to the kitchen, I added more plants to provide more cover. Most of them scuttle away when someone walks by but the Bolivian Rams seem not to care as much.

Good on adding plants: many fish are much much calmer if they have a good place to hide. I would even consider adding a darker cave type structure like a terra cotta pot or some stones or wood they could hide under.
