I have never had the money or space to set up a QT. Since I will be moving the fish in my 10g to the new 55g, I thought that the 10g could serve as a QT for any new fish. Is a 10g big enough? I plan on having rummynose tetras, harlequin rasboras, pearl gouramis, cories, and ottos in the new tank. Would they be ok in a 10g for a couple weeks before they go into the new tank? I wouldn't put too many in there at a time of course. I already have all the equipment and its planted. So would that work? |

The idea of that tank is to house them comfortably for a week or two to ensure that they are healthy and to get them used to your water conditions. Generally, if you are purchasing fish, you don't buy one of something, but rather several especially if they are shoaling or schooling fish. You would purchase a shoal, or school, and depending upon the fish, a 10G tank would not be large enough to hold the group without stressing them. Generally speaking, a 20 or 25 or 30G tank is more appropriate. 10G tanks are, generally speaking, better as "hospital" tanks where you can "confine" the sick fish, easily make changes to water, and the math for dosing medications is much easier when you use a factor of 10 to figure out how much to give. A 10 or 20% water change in a 10G tank makes more difference to a sick fish than in a larger tank. Frank ![]() -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

I already have 6 Harlies moving over to the 55g, so I only plan on getting about 4-6 more. Rummies, well I'll have to see how many I can actually find before I know how many will go in the new tank. I already have 4 in my other 55g, but if I can't find anymore healthy ones, I'll probably go with lemon tetras instead. And those, I would add about 6 at a time. I have 4 albino cories already. I bought them small and plan to buy any others small (~1 inch). If I add about 4-6 more of them, maybe they could stay in a 10g for a couple weeks...especially if I only go with 4 more. The pearl gouramis may be another story. I don't think they'd be happy in a 10g. I do have to locate some before I add them to my stocking list though. Well maybe I'll just have another hospital tank. I can't afford a 20g or larger set up...and my parents have pretty much drawn the line after this 55g. Oh well....I tried! ![]() Maybe I can turn the 10g into a Shellie tank...hmmm...more ideas. ![]() |
