Is it ok to feed spirulina to carnivorous fish? I have angelfish and dwarf gouramis in my 30 gallon set up and feed them New Life Spectrum Community Fish Formula as well as blood worms one to two times a week. I was just wondering about throwing some spirulina flakes into their diet occasionally but am not sure if I should. Thanks for any input!

Sure! Depending on the food you are feeding, you could find that it has a large chunk of veggie or cereal matter anyway. I'm pretty sure that NLS foods have various algae meals and garlic in their community formulas anyway

I wouldn't make spirulina a staple for either of those species (although I suspect they might do OK on it as many spirulina foods have a suprisingly large portion of fish meal for some reason), but it wouldn't be a problem for them to use it to break up their feeding routine.

Have a read of your labels and see what ingredients are in the processed foods

Thanks so much for the help. I thought that it should be ok but I really wanted to double check first.

I tried feeding the spirulina flakes this morning after reading your posts and the gouramis LOVED it but the angels not so much. They ate a couple flakes quickly then spit them back out again and wouldn't touch anymore

Anyway...thanks again!

With any good feeding program it must be varied if you look in My Profile you will see that I have tried many different foods over the years. I do not like using any live foods (unless you breed it your self) as you have no control of where it comes from and what it can bring into the tank.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Even my Angel don't like the Spirulina Flakes much, but i think it's because, he's used to Live Mosquito Larvae & Bloodworms, that i have in some still water. He's really spoilt.......

Spirulina algae have a pretty high protein content anyway, so it's not likely to hurt them. Fish that will only go for live, moving food aren't likely to take it, but anything else should be fine as long as it's not the only component of their diet.
