I'm going to be moving within the next couple months. So I'm going to need to bag all my fish, plants, and filter media.

Where is the best place to get these bags?
I don't think buying online would be a good choice for me, since I only need at most 10 bags.
I also realize any place that sells fish will have bags, but do they sell them?

Most of the lfs will either sell you the bags for a very reasonble price, or in many instances just give them to you if you explain what you're needing them for. Ask at the lfs where you do most of your business and if they know you from past purchases they may just give them to you.

Yes, definately check with the LFS first. They can also show you the proper way to seal off the bags...

*I thought I knew what I was doing until I tried it.... It looks so easy when they do it.

IF for some reason they can not supply the bags for you, maybe they can at least let you know if THEY get them locally or suggest an alt. route.

OK thanks for the info. Since there's well over 10 local stores that sell fish I'd hope at least one store could spare some bags.

Yea, I used to give them away for situations just like that. If you're able to get some bags, try and snake the big bags and only fill them up with a little water, and try to leave as much air as you can. Air is much more important on a trip than water for a fish.

Also, try not to feed your fish for a few days before you go. This will lower exretions and help the fish not to drown in it's own waste.

How long is the move?

Yea I'll definitely try to get the biggest bags possible. If I can only get small bags I'll probably need 15-20 bags, since I don't want to over load the bags.

I'm not sure where I'm moving yet(still need to find a place), but it will most likely be within a 20 minute drive.

Off Topic - Fallout, we can only hope the Camaro Concept is brought to production. I'm also hoping Pontiac follows suit with the Firebird.

I would forgo the bags completely and use a big picnic cooler, fill it only 5-6 inches with water, and transport the fish in that. It will maintain a stable temperature, has plenty of surface area and space for the fish, and it has room for you to put your plants and/or decorations and even your filter media. If you do go the bag route, you might consider carrying them all in a cooler or some kind of insulated container to control temperature and keep things dark and reasonably quiet to limit stress on the fish.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I was originally thinking about just putting them all(except Bettas) into a large cooler. But I've heard bagging them would be easier, especially when it comes times to add them back into their seperate tanks. I definitely will still use the cooler to kept all the bags in.

if you are only moving 20 minutes, I have another suggestion then. When I moved short distances I went to the local Walmart and bought cheap styrofoam coolers. I think they are normally used for fishing bait (minnow buckets). The work well to insulate and as long as you don't drive like you're in a road race, the water stays in the buckets fabulously.

In fact, I have done this TWICE for moves over 600 miles and haven't had a problem. However with 600 miles I had to aerate occassionally. Just another thought
