I am probably going to get a planted tank in April, and I was wondering how they were stocked. It will be a 29 gallon, and the only pics of planted tanks that I have seen were very lightly stocked. This tank will have Eco-Complete substrate and because my dad is completely infatuated with discus, I will probably get one. This will mean I will have some open areas in the front, I don't plan to heavily plant it, but it might end up that way. So, how do you stock them?

Hi,
Personally, I would stock a planted tank depending upon
what type of plants you are using and what fish you are
considering.

For instance, if you are going to have schooling fish,
or fish that are active, then you will want to leave plenty
of room for them to swim in. That could mean planting
tall stem plants to the sides and leaving a center swimming
area open, or planting one side leaving the opposite open.
In the "open areas" you could plant carpet plants or plants
that are not very tall when grown. Planting a Forest of
corkscrew val is an option on one side or in the middle
section.

I think you get the idea... The thing is to consider
what fish, and then what plants. Or the opposite...

Thanks, Frank. I want a discus, so I'll probably plant along the back and some denser areas to the side. After the Discus I might get some Glo-light tetras or something of the sort.

I know it would be kind of cramped if it was planted too heavily, but I plan to leave lots of room in the front for swimming. Also, there wouldn't be too many other fish so the discus would have room.

Discus need friends and need atleast a 55g tank. They get pretty big. They are very sensitive so I would give them the best possible setup (55g) if you want to keep them.

OK then. I'll try to keep my dad at bay about the discus, but in the mean time I have a question. My new Mickey Mouse Platy has a white spot on its tail, it looks kind of fuzzy but I can't tell. It is acting normal, eating too. Is it just a blemish or should I be worried?

I don't know about that.

Make a post in the hospital forum. Someone should be able to help you there. If possible, get a picture. That helps alot when trying to ID diseases and stuff.
