My kids are going to be living with me at least until the end of the school year in June. At their dad's house they have a 10g (platies and cherry barb pair, maybe 6 fish total, artifical plants) and a 20g (BN, RTBS, pearl gourami, school of danios, some live plants).

My ex will probably remember to feed them but I honestly doubt water changes/tank cleanings will get done. Any thoughts on how long the fish will last?

That's hard to say really. Many fish seem to be invincible and can go for very long periods with poor conditions (obviously not recommended). Is this a situation where there will be no water changes until June? or will there be an occassional opportunity to do one?

What type of filtration is on the tanks and will this go totally ignored also?

Jim

Depends how much they are fed. I've seen such tanks with fish still in them after a couple years. If they are overfed though the tanks can crash in less than a month. My mom managed to take a very well balanced planted 55g and have it coated in an inch of algae by the time I got back 2weeks later. Automatic feeders are more reliable than her.

The 10g has a Whisper 10 and the 20g has a Whisper 30.

The kids were 100% in charge of the tanks so I believe the only thing their father will do is feed them. I don't think it will be a matter of overfeeding; we'll really be lucky if he remembers for feed them a few times a week

Thanks for the help though. I just wanted to get an idea so the kids are prepared just in case

Hi,
I hope that he thinks about topping the tanks off for
evaporation, or at some time the filters will loose
there suction and the tank will begin to foul.

If the risk is that high , might as well upsticks the the tank and the fish and bring it with you, or set up a 10 gal as cheaply as possible , bag the fish and bring em over. 6 months is a long time to leave fish with someone who doesnt care about them, and certainly long enough to be worth the risk of a tank move or some sort of rehoming.

One thing ive learned is that if you dont think you can trust someone with the wellbeing of an animal of any kind.... DONT.

Unfortunately the whole situation was fast...we were in court on a Monday, packing the van that night, and back in MD the following afternoon.

He's coming to visit the kids this weekend; there's a chance he'll be bringing at least the cherries, RTBS, and BN. No clue how he'll end up bagging them...

Well he apparently wasn't able to catch the BN but did bring the RTBS and 2 platies. The water in the bags looked awful and was 65F
