Sup All!

So the topic title says it all. It all started 3 trumpet snails in my old 25gal that I had b4. Now I got a 55gal (everything transfered from the 25gal). I've got an investation of trumpets now(I think I got over a thousand in my tank) I wanna get rid of em

I thought of getting clown loaches but I'm afraid of their potential size. My gf bought me snail pur and told me to do it the easy way but she omited the idea that I have shrimps in my tank. I've considered doing DIY mechanism to take the snails out slowly but I wanted to hear what u guys have in mind? Any recommendations or ideas?

Gee

Hello,
75% of My Trumpets snails burrow under the gravel in the day time, So you think you got 1,000 snails, really probably got many many more, Anyway whatb you need to do is..(This is what i do)
1. turn tank light off,
2.Wait, as the snails crawl up the tank wall to eat algae at night,
Then turn the lights on then collect the snails,
Trumpets are not egglayer trumpets are live-bearing,

Yo Yo Loaches stay much smaller and will munch on your snails And they're really cool fish to boot

Also, you could blanch a piece of lettuce/cucumber, tie it to a rock and toss it in. The snails'll flock to it. Just remove the veggies and the hoarde of snails on it Do that a few times, and add the loaches, and you should have your problem controlled quite quickly.

the snails are good to have in a tank - maybe not 1000, but some, as the dig in the substrate, allowing nutients to plant roots, stops the substate compacting and they eat and left over food, dying leaves.

i suggest the veg way, i used it to remove my pest remhornes, leave the light off when lifting the veg out or the snails just drop off, back to square one.

good luck.

I tired that idea and I just got fed up waiting in front of the tank everytime the lights turn off!! When the lights turn off I still have to wait for the freggin things.

I will try out the lettuce in my tank, and u guys suggested that I get some clowns. How many should I get due to the fact that I only have a 55?

Get yoyo loaches. They only get around 4 inches and will also eat snails.
You could have about 6 depending on what other bottom feeders you plan to have.
I have 4 yoyos in my 55g and they keep the snail population down.

Clowns get too large. You would need to get a bigger tank in the next couple years if you got clown loaches.

Yoyos are great fish!

Just some thoughts:

You don't know how many snails you have, the trumpet snails may number in the thousands! If you kill them, you will have a thousands of dead snails putrifying in your gravel. Think of that ammonia spike!

Loaches are great snail eaters and they will dive into the gravel to get them. They are also active at night when the snails are active. I don't know if the loaches would eat shrimp.

Yah I thought about that and I was afraid that would happen therefore I didn't used the Snail Pur!

OK...for the loaches, I've been thinking about gettin loachs for a while now. Clowns are outa question because of their potential size.

I was suggested yoyo, any other suggestions for loachs?

Do all loaches eat snails?

My tank is a 55gal with a ph of 5.5-6
Semi heavy planted.
In habitants are:

1 XL angel
2 small angel
6 cherry barbs
3 pairs of apisto cacatoides
2 Males BNS
3 guppies
4 cories

It looks like I'm pretty stocked right?

I know the yoyos eat pond snails and some ramshorn snails. I have never had trumpet snails so I am not sure if they eat them.

I couldn't comment on the Yo-Yo's having never kept them, but any loach alone will not rid you of the problem.

I keep amazon puffers (Colomesus asellus) and as you may know, they have very fast growing teeth and need to eat snails to keep them short. I introduced just 5 trumpet snails to try to get them to wear the teeth down, but they showed no interest at all. So i decided to think of something else and forgot all about the snails. Then about a month later i came home very late one night, walk in and saw to my horror around 800-1000 trumpet snails all over the glass and bogwood. I got a group of clowns to try to help control them, that was months ago, and as sure as i am that they are eating them there has been no noticable difference at all. So i will soon be trying the lettuce leaf trick, hopefully i can remove enough so the clowns can keep them under control. Although it must be accepted that you are very unlikely to ever get rid of them altogether

I've got 3 cories in my tank and sometimes my lfs has snail eggs ride in on the plants. Will they eat small snails if they show up, or should I be careful with the plants?

Cories don't touch snails at all, and u should do a salt dip on the plants b4 u intorduced them into ur tank.
