Can anyone give me any ideas on how to stop my water evaporting so quickly? It seems like about 23% of the water in my 10 gall, evaporates in 4 days? Any ideas?

Are you using an air stone? If so that will increase evaporation 10 -15 % over the normal. Also, what is your water temp.

I have an air bubbler thing, and my temp is usually around 80. I have a hood on my tank that came with it.....

Why do you have the temp up to 80? Many fish do just fine and some better, at lower temps than that. Actually the majority of fish in the Aquaria trade prefer temps around 75F give or take a few degrees.

The "air bubbling thing" will cause more surface movement of the water, that combined with an increased temp greater than the air around it, will drastically increase the evaporation of the water. The only way to slow this if you do not change anything about the tank, is to have a tight fitting secured lid.

What kind of fish are you keeping in the tank?

A good glass top can cut evaporation rate by 75% or more.

I agree with the glass top, helps keep down the evaporation in my 2 tanks that use it.

Losing 23% in 4 days sounds excessive. Are you sure you don't have a leak? Your losing 1/2 gal. per day. I'd check for leaks.

I certainly would use a good glass cover. As far as any leaks I think you would see it any way.

Where do you live? Someone local might be able to advise you where to get one. Personally I would just get one custom-cut by a glazier.

a cover glass is just what you are looking for
my tank is in the sun room, and in the summer it gets up to the 40s
all the water vapors will stick to the cover glass and condense into liquid again
so it's like showering all the time in my tank

I also lose a lot of water to evaporation in my 10 gal, more so than my 29. level drops anout 3/4 of an inch in a week. I use an airstone and keep the temp at 78. the mollies in there like it. next time i do a water change I'll leave the bubblers off and see if it makes a difference. do I really need one in there anyway? could the incandescent lights be evaporating it more quickly? I know they produce more heat than flourescents.

Your local climate can also have a lot to do with evaporation, especially if you live in a dry climate. I live in Arizona, USA, and get quite a bit of evaporation that I never got with the exact same setup in Michigan.
