At the moment there are large CLs 1 large SS 1 large Hoplo
2 large Opaline Gourami, 3 fully grown Bolivian Rams. Breeding BNs, 6SAE could be more. Eheim Pro11, UGF 3 risers. and Full planted mainly Anubias.

I have tried Platies but all died water just too soft.
I am looking for a smaller colourful top to middle level schooling fish.

Any ideas please

Keith

Rainbowfish sounds like exactly what you want, unless you were looking for something smaller. Danios would be another option for smaller fish.

If I decided to go Rainbow Getting them could be the problem, which variety would you recommend.

At least here in the US, Boesemani are one of the most common and have the most color. Dwarf Neon Rainbows are also relatively common and are smaller than the other rainbows. I also often see a few other rainbow species, but I don't really pay attention to what species they are.

Many species are worth investigating and are colorful in their own right. Most of the Melanotaenia or Glossolepis species are medium to large-sized schoolers. I admittedly haven't kept any of the rainbows so I don't have any biases towards any particular species, they all seem like nice fish to me!

There are, of course, very small rainbowfish and their kin, such as the featherfin rainbow, the Celebes rainbow, Pseudomugil species, and others. While these are very colorful, I would worry that their small sizes and particular demands may make them less good candidates for your aquarium.

MY LFS has changed hands and I have not been back for a while so this gives me a reason to have a look see.
