frozen foods are the closest things to live food, but a little more convienent. They are better because they have more nutrients in them compared to the freeze dried foods.

I would just like to interject that freeze-drying DOES retain almost all the nutritional value of the food. Just like the water evaporating from your tanks, the water leaving the to-be-freeze-dried food is virtually pure water, leaving all the nutrients and vitamins behind.

Here are what I see as the pros/cons:

Freeze dried food is more conveinent, and some people do not like the concept of frozen mosquito larvae in thier freezer where they keep their food. You should probably soak it in a cup of tank water for a few minutes before feeding, so it does not rehydrate and swell your fishes' bellies. Also, if you get it wet, bacteria can grow on the food and the bacteria will consume all those nutrients that were so carefully preserved. Of course, you should be keeping all your food dry, flakes, granules, freeze dried, whatever. If you check the nutritional facts, both frozen and freeze dired are about equal, it is just the ice weight that dilutes the frozen food. For example, frozen bloodworms may be 10% protein by weight, versus 60% protein for the freeze dried worms, but you also get a 6 times heavier package from the freezer.

Ultimatly, it comes down to you, or what your fish prefer. I use both, but probably feed frozen food more often. I like the wider variety of frozen food available locally to the freeze dried food.

You'll find the nutrients are much higher on a can of freeze dried food, as all the moisture has been taken out and the nutrients compacted.

Frozen has much more moisutre, therefor a lower nutrient content.

Frozen seems to be preferred by many fish, however.

I didn't think it made much difference to my fish whether I fed them freeze-dried or frozen until the first time I fed them frozen bloodworms. What a feeding frenzy! It is really fun to watch. I'm not sure there's much to choose between them nutritionally, but the fish seem to like the frozen better.

I prefer frozen as I believe it retains the nutrients better. (I have no evidence for this, it's just what I believe based on my knowledge of human foods.)

The disadvantage of frozen food is that it has to be meticulously transported and stored. If it gets thawed and re-frozen it loses its nutritional value very quickly.

Freeze dried I would say is the best source of food. I used to feed my bettas with a pair of tweezers, and some sort of freeze-dried mosquito larva.

from what i understand, it seems to be a matter of preference. rasco is correct has far as nutrients. people i know who swear by freeze dried claim that any nasty unwanted organisms are basically zapped by the freeze drying process. true or false? i have no idea.

i have been using both for years (i like to vary my aquatic diet) and cannot tell the difference. however, my fish food menu is diverse enough that the veggies (or whatever) are offsetting any deficiences in either the frozen or freeze dried menu options.

Frozen foods are better because they retain nutrients that help fish grow, maintain health, and bring out vibrant colors.

Bloodworms, brine shrimp, etc should be used as a supplement to adult fish diets rather than a staple food.

I use frozen as treats generally and god bless them but my fish go mental for the frozen brine shrimp. I think its best to mix it up though.

funnily enough my fish completely ignored the frozen brine shrimp I gave them, but they love my freezedried bloodworms? now I give them flake food and bloodworms on mondays and fridays

Fish are like potato chips. . .you can't have just one

i've changed my mind since my last post. I now prefer freeze dried foods for pretty much the reason that fallout said. just look at the labels and compare. freeze dried krill (quality brands) have like 60% protein and only 4-5% fat. frozen krill doesn't even come close to that. I've been feeding my fish a lot more freeze dried krill and bloodworms and they seem to love it. the puffers I had used to eat freeze dried krill no problem. granted they'd eat frozen as well but they used to gobble up freeze just the same.
