I was doing a water change this evening and noticed a white powdery substance on my filter cap and on the hood. Does anyone know what that is?

Powder?

If it's what I'm thinking of, give it some more time and a more accurate description would be "crust" rather than "powder". You probably just have hard water, and when it gets other places and evaporates, it leaves the other stuff behind, including that annoying white stuff. Just wipe it off to avoid it's build-up and you'll be fine.

Hi,
Elaborating on what metagon said, it is probably just
Calcium Carbonate, and can be easily washed off, if you
do it religiously. If you let it build up then you may
have to scrape it off, or wash the stuff off with vinegar
(a weak acid). I have it on my glass top all the time
and use a plastic scrubby and vinegar to clean the glass.

Yup, definately sounds like calcium deposits. I have really hard water so I have to battle it all the time.
