I've had a betta with an angelfish, and they left each other alone. The problem is, the angelfish will not fit into the twenty gallon, period. Don't put it in there.

angelfish grow to around 6" long and get around 10" high. altums get to 8" long and 14" high. the smallest tank i would put an adult pair of angelfish in is 37 gallons ( 30x12x24" ). this size is almost perfect. if an oscar is too big for a 50g tank, than an angel is too big for a 20g tank.

i wouldnt trust the blackskirts more than i wouldn't trust the angel.

i think all in all a betta is a bad idea.

EDIT: i just did a rather frenzied check that i have the right species and it seems that i do.Gymnocorymbus ternetzi, if that is the fish you are referring to, i have found to be quite nippy. They aren't vicious as such, just incredibly mouthy with good aim and good teeth.

Sorry for the hijack but you are all talking about something I am thinking of doing. I have a 29 gallon hexagon tank , that is about 24 inches high. I was thinking of having a nice pair of Angelfish as centerpeice fish, but I would like to have at least some catfish, algae eater and maybe some other nice looking fish (maybe a schooling fish???????). What else could fit in this size tank and live happy and healthy?? I'm dying to find out what exactly I can get away with as far as a stock list for this tank, without compromising the health of my fish. Suggestion are appreciated...Thanks!

Boil,
Is it a 20 high (2 feet long by 17 inches high)? If so you're fine with an Angelfish in it. If it's 3 inches without fins it's about full grown.

How many Cories and how big the Pleco is will determine if you can add a Betta. The Angel will probably be fine with it as it's not part of a breeding pair and the Betta won't hurt the Angel.

Just remember, If you are on the edge of being overstocked, maintainence and water changes are very important and should be done frequently.

Good luck, Mike

Its ok Boil, dont fret too much. You could get a larger tank for the angel. I think a 25 Tall would do. The problem with a 20 is not that its not long enough, but that its not tall enough. A 20g tank is not very tall, my guess is not much more than 12-14 inches in most cases. A full grown angels can reach 10 inches from top to bottom fins. My Angels are in a tank 20 inches tall, and measure my guess would be around 7 inches tall, my male angel maybe more. A Short tank is not really suited to angels. Its a dilemma though, because most other fish we would want to keep with Angels, prefer a longer tank rather than taller. Also, at a year of age, your angel should be substantially bigger than that.
I dont know where you live, but Petcetera here in Canada, has 25g tall tank setups for 89.99 on sale, 119 regular. They come with everything you need, and now even come with a HOB filter rather than undergravel.
I have my angels in one side of my tank divided with around 30g space. My new male Betta got in, and by the time I realize he was in there, half his tail was gone. I would worry your angel would kill your betta. For some reason it just seems to me that Fish with bright colors and long fins seem to make angels mad.
Anyway, I say you could try it, see how it goes. If it doesnt work, take the betta back.
Good luck.

Yes, but angelfish do grow larger than a twenty gallon can handle. Normal angels can get six inches long, and six or more inches tall. You might have a naturally small angelfish, I don't know, but the majority won't fit in a twenty. If yours has stopped growing, it might be getting stunted. I wouldn't want that to happen.

It is possible that the betta would kill the angel. I've had bettas kill rams, although that was a male betta you might be unlucky enough to get a female that is that agressive.

When I was a kid, we had an angelfish in a 20 also. It lived in there for seven years. However, it is recommended to keep them in a minimum of 30 gallons so that they have plenty of room to grow (the one we had when I was a kid didn't get much more than 2" in body diameter, plus some pretty long fins) and swim. I still recommend 30 or more gallons, even though I've seen them live a while in smaller.

a 20 is definatley not soo small for an angel, if u think that IMO

Um, yes, a 20 is too small for an angel. That is why there have been, what, 3 other members that backed me up on saying it?

Angels get pretty big, and they are a cichlid, which means they can get aggressive when in a small space. They need room, and territories.

Some of my angels are almost full-grown, and I can't imagine them being happy in my 20. They like to roam around, and they're really big fish!

Not only are angels long, they're also tall.

Angels just get too big for a 20 gallon.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.
