it really depends on how well you want your tank to look
and how much spare money you have on hand

if you go with a standard 4ft x 14inch and a stand
the two will cost you about $150~$200 depends on where you get them
and for filter, if you want the best "eheim" it will cost you another $100~$150
and lights are a must, for a 42G you will need around 100watts of light
it's going to cost a "bit".
and heater and all the plants

it's going to be at least over $500

Depends on the plants. DW is usually a good ten buck a piece here (good sized pieces, I might add). I'd assume you'd spend anywhere from 15-25 dollars on 2-3 pieces of wood. Plants go for quite a bit--if you want a really heavily planted tank, I'd bet money you're going to spend at least 50 bucks on plants (the hardiest plants seem to cost the most), more still for lighting.

That depends on many things, Rocks, driftwood/petrified wood, type of plants and their size. With my Anubias tank some of the smallest will cost between $12-$20. The larger varieties you would be very lucky to get any reasonable sized piece under $30 and if it is on drift wood I have seen it over $100.

I am lucky I had a very reasonable priced supplier all the smaller varieties were grown by the person who owned the Aqu shop. Another supplier is a wholesaler/importer
In total BIG BUCKS
