i recently had a pristella tatra die on me and couldnt seem to find out why. all the other fish are fine but the thing is that it was my oldest fish. he was probably about 4 years old. and he was like the biggest one in the tank at my lfs wen i got him. how long shud they live?

4 Years is likely good for a pristella. Fish do indeed die of old age, but longevity can vary immensely depending on the species of fish, with some killies barely exceeding a year, and some cats living well over 5 decades.

In the wild it could be different as they age the more aggressive fish would see dinner please.

Where as in a protected enviornment certainly.

Yes, fish can die of old age.

If they couldnt, we would probably still have those wierd fossle fish swimmin around

We do, if you count the coelacanth.

Fish die of old age, as do all living things. Chances are that your fish lived a longer life than it would have in the wild, what with the dangers of being eaten and the need to find food every day. Don't worry, it happens to everything.
