Flashing also may occur after water changes. I guess the suddenly new water can irritate the skin.

Some fish just get an itch too, this is commonly seen in cichlids, but some fish have a tendency of doing it out of the blue a lot...

There is a chance it may be flukes, as well. For example, the skeptical aquarist states "When fishes 'flash' against objects, yet you see no visible parasites, gill flukes (egg-laying Dactylogyrus) or body flukes (livebearing Gyrodactylus) are among the likely suspects."

Especially troubling is the possibility of the flukes opening vectors for bacterial or fungal infection. So, if you have recently had to battle fin rot or similar, you may condsider the possibility of flukes.

If the pH hasnt been matched when doing water changes fish can "itch" aswell. Which in turn leads to stress, making the fish more vulnerable to ich and other diseases.

Make sure you pH isnt jumping around the place greenmonkey.

My fish sometimes do it with no visable signs of parasites, I believe this has something to do with my water... Being in texas the water probably isn's as pure as it could be and some mineral could be inflaming their gills.
