so this brings the total count to 5 free tanks a girl across the street was moving out today and we were coming home from the start of this big music festival. about an hour ago we were walking by her house to see what kind of good stuff she might have left behind in her move (she has to be out by today still hadn't finished packing too ) anyway, she left a 10g WITH LIVE GUPPIES sitting on the curb waiting to be picked up. ]:| i couldn't believe the disregard she had for these fish. she was kind of frustrated from the sounds of things because "these fish keep having babies" anyway, she said the tank was on the curb for no more than an hour, but it looked like she had never cleaned the damn thing one time since she had the tank. so now i've got 2 10g tanks, one with a betta and one with guppies. tomorrow i've gotta get some new bulbs for the hood cause the ones she left were no good. but at least these fish have a good home now...

Those Guppies where very lucky, but now they're in very good hands.

yeah, the girl thanked me for taking the tank, but i almost told her she was abusing her fish ] i just had to remind myself that she was probably not aware of the proper care for a tank, and also that she was flustered from the fact that she was still moving out at 2am

moondog,

Could you please take me with you the next time you walk around the block?
You are attracting free tanks like mad, what is it?
Do you have some kind of glass magnet in your pocket?

Anyway, have fun with this tank now. One word of caution (I guess too late though):
If she never cleaned that tank, be careful not to shock the Guppies by putting the in some “fresh” water. IMHO, the change of environment is causing stress and it would be better to slowly accustom them to a good fish daddy.

Awesome. You've got some wicked luck, I'd say.

i should point out that 3 of my 5 tanks were given to me by people who i knew or knew through someone else. this is only the second tank i've found on the curb the other one was my 50g tank.

yes, i can use an endless supply of guppy feeders babel

and i changed about half the water when i brought it home, after gravel vac-ing it so that i could move it the 5 or 6 houses down to my house. the guppies have seemed to survive the night, but the hood is not only incandescent, but both lights were burned out so now i have to go to the store and get two new lights and also hope the hood works since i don't know if it does or not

***points moondog to walmart for fresh light bulbs***

congratulations on the new find, and congratulations on saving the poor little guys and gals...Those poor fishies had no idea they were about ot become fishy soup on the curb...but now they are in a good home...take care of them and i'm sure they will make you more babies than you even want to think about

And how exactly did you "find" a free 50 gallon tank? Might make a good home for all those new guppies that will be coming soon

I found fluorescent bulbs at Wal-Mart that are made to fit in the incandescent sockets. I used them and they worked pretty effectively...definately brighter.

mrs moondog actually helped me bring the tank home if it didn't have fish in it already, and she hadn't actually seen these fish before, i think she would have thrown another fit about how many tanks we have this tank came from a place across the street where our friend will be moving in later today, so she went with our friend when he looked it over and saw these fish at that time.

and i will never ever ever ever ever set foot in walmart. and i will never ever ever ever ever write a song about sibbie. oops, that was strong bad talking anyway, i hate walmart, and i will never shop there no matter how cheap their stuff is (both in price and workmanship). i don't even like going to home depot, and i try my best not to, but sometimes they are a little more convenient to go to, although the local hardware store has much friendlier people and they actually help you as well but any big box store is off limits for my shopping dollars.

oh, and i found the 50g just sitting on the curb, same as this current 10g i just got yesterday. found it just after someone had thrown it out and just before the stupid drunk frat boys came along to smash it up like they always do it was a great find, and it's home to my big pleco (first fish i ever bought ) an angel, some clown plecs and a couple flying foxes. once the angel gets a little bigger it will start getting guppy feeders, but for now i think my severum might like them for a snack now and then
