i don't see why not, considering that acrylic tanks have to be heated somehow

What size tank are we talking about? The smallest heaters are made for either 2 or 3 gallon tanks, they will overheat anything with less capacity.

My daughter has a 25 watt in her 5 gal. acrylic tank and it does a great job. I don't think they get hot enough to do any damage to the plastic.

I have a small ten gallon acrylic tank with a 50 watt heater not submersible and its great nothing will happen wrong as long as you keep a current that moves the water

I had a 50 watt in my 6 gallon hex when it was running...honestly the light that came with the tank (incandescent) caused more worry than the heater. I'd reccomend getting submersible rather than a HOB heater...with small tanks the water volume can drop rather quickly causing the heater to break.

I do not have an acrylic tank but have seen many various sizes set up and runing.

I can not see any logical reason why not.
