hi, i often see on the net people who make their own fishfood, in particular for fish such as oscars. they set it in gelatine then freeze it. does that mean they feed it to their fish frozen? because if they just thawed it out it would just turn to mush right?

i think they feed it frozen, similsar to feeding frozen bloodworms or cubes of that nature.

I cant imagine it being that pleasant, killer ice cream headache!

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

they set it in gelatine then freeze it.

Unless they're using a very diluted gelatine it won't turn to mush for awhile. Cooking gelatine, even desert gelatine like jell-o takes a few minutes in hot water to dissolve.

My frozen foods are mixed with dry and allowed to warm a few moments before feeding.

I used to follow this recipe for fish food when I had discus. I'm sure it would be a food enjoyed by other fish aswell though.

1 Beef heart (trimmed of fat)
1 Carrot (steamed tender)
1 cup green beans (steamed tender)
1 zucchini (steamed, or a couple of spinach leaves)
1 container Tetra Vitality bits (ither food is ok)
1 fillet fish (left raw - try for boneless or close to)
3 cloves crushed garlic

Chop everything roughly and process in food processor til
pureed.
Freeze in ice-cube trays or in freezer bags and break bits off as needed.

I feed my Oscars frozen food... it's from my LFS and called something like Frozen Fish Dinner... i thought it might be tropical fish for ME to eat... but apparently it's for my Oscars and Moorii They love the stuff... no time for it to thaw... it doesn't even hit the water. Infact, i make them jump atleast their body length to get it It's a VERY good party trick. If i had more fish, i'd make my own frozen food... but i read somewhere it doesn't keep all that long, and you need to make fairly large quantities to get the ratios just right. So i buy the pre-packed stuff.

PS: Lindy, i love your thumbnail thingy... i use to have a Duck who thought it was a dog. It kept humping my chickens (and rooster) so i had to give him away. He's now gone to 'stud'... quite litteraly the only drake on an all duck farm!

This is like the 6th time I've heard garlic used as a supplement in fish food. What role does the garlic play? Does it entice the fish? <---Just wondering.

I believe garlic is meant to boost the immune system.

Could I soak my bloodworms in garlic prior to feeding time? I heard something along the lines of that before...

lindy,

they wack all the food in the blender first THEN add plain gelatine (following the instrucitons on the pack, dissolved in hot water)

iv heard of people feeding beefheart and liver to their fish, i also fed it to my oscars for awhile, then i also read in alot of forums that fish shouldnt be fed it because they cannot process the animal fats and it will begin to effect their liver.

hmmm im still not quite sold on feeding frozen blocks to fish! if i try to thaw it out abit will the gelatine keep it together?

i use jack watley discus formula for my discus and when it thatws it looks just like it did when frozen just a bit squsy i then mush it up. so yes the gelatin stays together after it thaws at leastfor a little while.
