a guy my wife works with says there's some movement to make fish food vegetarian, and he wants me to advise him on what veggies fish prefer. apparently people think that *all* fish can be made vegetarian, just like some people think that dogs can be made vegetarian does anyone know of this "movement"?

No, but it sounds perfectly ridiculous to me. Most fish are better off with some protein in their diet, and most will happily eat meat-containing foods. The same goes for dogs, I don't know what the deal is there. I think it is an attempt by ultra-vegan people to control their pets. They don't want those 'evil' meats to be fed to their pets, oh no, it is just wrong! Besides, a vegetarian fish is probably less healthy than one that eats live foods and whatnot.

In the wild
There are some Marine species that are totally Vegetarian any way whereas others are totally meat eaters.

I am not too sure about FW species so no comment.

What a loon. To think, all fish can be made vegetarian. Huh, probably some kind of sick joke on his part.

i know there are some fish which *prefer* veggie matter (i.e. plants or algae) over other fish, but they will still eat whatever is in front of their faces. this guy seems to think that he can make some money selling vegetarian fish food, but he's supposed to be calling me soon to find out what veggies fish like to eat

i know my dojo loaches kinda converted carnovore on there own, (about %95 of there diet is stuff my cichlids drop) other wise they pretty much ignore the algea wafers, and the pleco gets 2 enjoy them

sounds rediculous! how can all fish turn into vegie eaters?...
IMO ..all these vegeterian fish keeprs who cannot keep non-veg fish food .... better give up the hobby.... or keep only herbivours...

Sounds like the work of PETA...they want all pet food to be vegetarian, and suggest idiotic things like feeding cats (obligate carnivores) rice.

I've never heard of this, and I hope this guy doesn't end up force-feeding some poor, carnivorus fish nothing but veggies for the rest of it's aptly short life.

I hope he figures out that certain creatures require certain nutrients to funtion properly, before he ends up killing something

When I was about 14 I tried to get my family to sign a petition on behalf of greenpeace to the Japanese government against whale hunting. My family said that they support the cause so they will never hunt or eat whales, but refused to sign. I think you should do the same in case he calls. Tell him that there's nothing you can do to make your fish become vegeterian, but that you personally will never eat fish food containing meat ever again.

Mind you, I have never forgiven my family for saying that. Not because of the whales as much as because I was only a child and they could have supported me and my stupid teenage whims. So if he never phones again, that might be the reason. On the other, hand, by the sound of this guy, you might want him not him to phone.
