i just recently started over my 55 gallon tank, i went to my local fish store yesterday and picked up 7 fish. 2 swordtails, 2 black mollys and 2 black tetras and an angel. i noticed when i got home from work last night one of the black tetras were dead. got up this morning the other black tetra was dead??? how long should i wait to put more fish in the tank?? my goal is to keep the tank a peaceful enviroment but also have the fish live. my last setup in the tank had different varietys of cichlids and a pretty big tinfoil barb which those fish were going on 2 yr's old.

Did you cycle the tank before getting them?

Well, I think some of the problem *may* stem from the angelfish. Now, while they are awesome fish, (at least mine is) they do gobble up tetras in the wild. If your tank has cycled, and the fish have been acclimated, then the angelfish may have been nibbling on the tetras.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

7 small fish in an uncycled 55gal tank will not kill 2 fish in such a short period. either the water parameters from the lfs to the 55gal were way different, or something was wrong with the b-tetras prior to purchase. the tank is roomy enough that the b-tetras would have ample space to escape any harrassment from an angel fish, unless the angel was already full grown.

If you don't have one already, I strongly suggest you get a test kit (that tests ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate). With those tests you will figure out when your cycle is done. If you don't know what the cycle is, read up on it here:

http://www.fishprofiles.net/faq/begin-cycling.asp

It usually takes a month for a tank to cycle. That is when you can add more fish (a little at a time).

One question...how did you acclimate your fish?

My guess would be that the tetras you put in the tank dont like "new" water, as apposed to a tank thats been established for a couple of months after the cycling process.
As the others have said, dont add anymore fish to the tank until the cycle has completed. Read up on the information the others have linked you to.
