I recently purchased several used tanks and included was a 30 gallon long that is drilled with a overflow in the tank and I was curious would this be sufficient to setup a tank with salt water with fish and live rock?

Is the overflow so I could set up a sump tank or is this setup for something different

If so what is the best approach and I know I would be limited as to livestock for this size tank so what would be appropriate or best

Thanks for your input.

Jim

You're not as limited for livestock as you think. A 30 long with a drilled overflow was most likely used as a reef tank sometime in the past and could be used as such again. A wide range of invertebrates would be able to survive in that tank without an issue, and as far as fish stock goes, there are a lot of fish that are suitable for a tank that large (or smaller)...I have a 12 gallon tank that I'm going to be setting up as a nanoreef and am looking at quite a few fish to be my possible stock... Lots of clownfish and other small reef-safe fish would work with a small reef setup in that tank...

That would make a nice reef tank. Perhaps 3 smaller fish, 40 or so pounds of live rock, several shrimp, and a few corals. Provided you put plenty of light over the tank. The over flow cna go to a sump or refugium to add more water volume.
