Sounds like some sort of Puffer or something... I'm not really sure what it could be...:%)

Many puffers get that big, so it doesn't quite help with identification very much.:%)

I saw this fish at Atlantis aquariums yesterday. MAN what an UGLY fish.

There was a sign on the tank that said "no fingers" and I could see why. Its mouth looked like it could be used as a bolt cutter.

Time for ascii drawing!

Teeth Kinda looked like:
_____
|+|+|
|_|_|
-buck teeth on top and triangular pointy teeth below
./||\
/+||+\

It had a kind of reef shark looking scale pattern and had a boxy head. Anyone know what this ugly fish is?

PS: I had to put braces on these teeth as the ascii was mucking up.

I was thinking maybe a boxfish but as we have found out what it is I a bit late.

Boxfish are related to Puffers right?

I've been told that you need rock in the tank for teh puffer to trim it's teeth. Otherwise they get to big. I've also heard you can trim it's teeth with a finger nail clipper. That sounds kind of hard.

It's possible that its teeth were overgrown. Which is not good for the puffer.

Troy, pick up a copy of Burgess' Mini-Atlas of Marine Aquarium Fishes. Look toward the back of the huge selection of colour plates where the puffers are. There's about 35 species listed & illustrated. Then see which of those your puffer looks like.

"Big and butt-ugly" suggests an Arothron species to me, because these can exceed 2 feet with ease. Oh, and they DO have teeth like bolt cutters! These things can bite through an arm into the bone when fully grown, which combined with their inflation capability (causing the dermal spines to become erect in the process) and toxic skin and internal organs makes them a less than palatable prospect for most other fishes.
