I am starting to plan a Marine set up. I have looked at the Aquaone ( 90 and 130 litre) and the Red Sea Max ( 130l) units. Has anyone had experience with these as a start to Marine tanks. I realise that corals etc would be hard but how about fish and basic Inverts?

Thanx

I have 3 aqua-one tanks, but they are all freshwater, not marine. But I also have a marine reef tank (hubby's) so I know a bit of what they need too.

For a marine fish only tank, an Aqua-One would be fine IMO, but remember that should you decide later on that you do want a reef tank, with all the corals, the Aqua-One tanks may limit what you can do.

IMO, the Aqua-One AR-620 (90L) might be the easiest one to convert later on to a reef tank, simply because it is at least a standard length (2ft). This means that for now you could enjoy it as a marine fish only tank. If in the future you decide you'd like to try corals, you can remove the hood, and replace it with a glass top. You can then sit a 2ft compact PC light fitting on top of the glass. Your Aqua-One could now let you have most corals.

Be careful with the other Aqua-One tank sizes, as most are not standard tank lengths, which means you cannot easily get a light fitting to suit the tank, which would then limit your future options with the tank.

If you are sure that you will always want fish only, then yes, the Aqua-Ones will do just fine. But .... are you really sure in 6 months time you won't be wishing you could add that gorgeous coral you saw in the LFS?

I have never used the Red Sea Max, so I cannot comment on them.

IMO, If you could afford it, I would get a regular glass tank, with a cannister filter and light. If not, get the Aqua-One AR-620 which will at least mean conversion to a higher tech tank is a possibility, should you wish this in the future.

Hope this helps a bit. Have fun.

Cheers
