I want to switch from freshwater to saltwater. Can I just pull out my freshwater fish, replace my gravel substrate with crushed coral, add salt to the proper level and add fish? Will the bacteria colonies from freshwater remain in saltwater?

I don't think the colonies will live myself and I would get some live rock and wait for 2 weeks depending on how much live rock you have. You also want a protien skimmer.

How much does live rock cost? and do I really need a protein skimmer? I've read they arent necessary for tanks uner ~25 gallons.

Adding salt will kill all the bacteria. You will have to start over with your cycle.

1 pound is about the size of a baseball. Not very big. Soem might be bigger, or smaller depending on how full of holes it is.
