My friend recently said to me "I wanna start a reef tank." I told him it would be a lot harder then the 55g fw he has, (which doesnt look like its doin to well) How can I convince him to stick to fw? He just wants a Shark and an Eel and fish I believe are way to advanced for him. He says "it can't be that hard" and you look at his 55 gallon tank with a 9" pleco some various loner tetras, and ofcourse the water hasnt been changed for 2 months. Please Help me enlighten him.

Just write out a list of all the stuff he'll need and the cost. That should cut the idea off very very quickly.

He will most likly go over $1000 just to get the tank up and running. Lights, rock, and live stock will cost more then he may be willing to pay.
A shark will need a very big tank, around 210gal, and will cost even more. Eels, depending on what he wants, can cost form $20 to $100, or even more.

Just to add to the scare factor with cost... Tell him of the books and research he'll have to do just for set up. That doesn't include the hours of reading or conversing he'll have to do just to learn proper maintenance and continued health of his $30 plus fish! And those are just the small common ones!!!!!!!!

If i could get him to read a book on fish care, i would, lol, all he wants to do is dump the fish in and watch them swim around until he gets bored. Good news is he'll probably let me have his 55g once he gets bored of it.

Now THAT is a good friend! Just remind him how much it costs to keep replacing the fish when/if they go belly up from lack of care. I don't like it when fishies die.]

...unless I go fishing and wanna eat them
