I'm starting to get quite a bit of green hair algae in my reef tank. I'm sure it's b/c of the phosphates and a ramora protein skimmer is in my budget or going to be soon. I was also wondering if there is any kind of cleaner that might help take care of some of the algae. I already have 20-30 hermits some snails, emerald crab, bi-color blenny (he eats quite a bit of the algae tho mainly on the glass) Some reccomendations that I have received from my LFS is the kole tang, lawnmower blenny(not sure w/ the bicolor in there), serpeant star (not sure w/ the corals tho, all softies and mushrooms) and the princess parrot (they said he stays small but I looked him up and he gets around 30 cm) This is for a 40 gallon reef. If anyone has any idea please let me know.

Thanks.

Yellow tangs do a good job, as well as lawnmower blennies. You can also look for a algea eating sea slug. They are one of the few that live in a tank.

I wouldnt suggest either a Kole Tang of Yellow Tang for your size tank. Keep up with water changes, and maybe add some more critters that will focus their attention on hair algae.

Your also probably going to need to get rid of the princess parrot. At around 12", its going to be too much fish for a 40 gallon tank. Thats why you research before you purchase

Ack, missed the tank size, skip the tang. Another option is put a phosphate sponge in the HOB filter, this will remove any phosphates you have in the tank and slow down or even stop any new growth.

I use RO water for my changes and I do not have a princess parrot, that is another fish that my lfs recommended to eat the hair algae. I've been thinking about the sally lightfoots but don't they get a pretty good size? How about emerald crabs.
