I know that as land hermit crabs grow they need new shells, is this also true for red leg hermit crabs in a marine tank?

Yup, saltwater hermit crabs need new shells as they grow.. I keep extra shells in my tank for just such a reason..

Yep, they can also take shells from snails.

Are they typically picky about the type of shells that you provide for them?

I ask because today I added several new shells to my tank for my hermit crabs who have seemed to be agitated the last week or so. Right away the crabs were checking out these shells ... crawling on them, turning them over, etc. ... but they didn't seem to want to do an exchange.

If they find one that looks nice, and fits right, they will switch. As long as you have extra shells of different sizes, they will be fine.
