I have been thinking of getting a lionfish for my 100Gal tank. I say semi reef as I have a few leather corals and corallimorphs. I would like to get a small juv fish and wacth him grow (fairly quickly I hear). The thing is I have a purple tang, chevron tang, Flame Angel and Clown fish in the tank, Will they be ok with a lionfish? I dont care so much about the clown I will get rid of him if I need to.

The lion will leave any fish alone that is to big to fit in its mouth. If you have shrimp, they might get eaten. Lions are a large bio load on a tank, and with what you have now, it may be to much for your tank.

I agree with Dan, in saying depending on how your tank is set up now (filtration wise mainly) it might be too much on the bio load.

If you've got a lot of live rock and a good skimmer, and maybe even a DSB plus good circulation, I'd say you could get away with it if you keep up on water changes.

I dont keep them personally, but I take care of them at the aquarium I work at, and let me tell you, they are just about the messiest fish we have. They love krill and silversides IME. If you keep them well fed they probably will grow at a relatively fast rate. It is cool to watch your fish grow up.

Take caution with Dan's warning---anything that fits in the mouth goes, and watch your inverts.

Ok then I might give the lionfish a miss then, even though they are cool I dont want to overload my tank, and messy fish bring back bad memories of my old FW oscar tank omg the poo!!!

I guess I could go for some kind dwarf lion but the ones I have seen here (Australia)are not that good looking, that is the small few Ive seen myself.

I really want a nice center pice fish but all the ones I like are too big, too agressive or like to eat soft corals
+ there are not many LFS that deal with SW fish unless I want to travel 1.5 hour to sydney I hate Sydney traffic]:|.

Whats a guy to do

avoid 7-10 and 4-6 the traffic will be smooth every where...

if your LFS really does lack selection, it won't be bad just to go further once in a while...
