I encountered this fish while walking through the NY Aquarium. It was in a MASSIVE tank with their penguin exhibit. There were three of them in the tank, and from time to time, they hung out together, so there's a possibility that they may be shoaling. They were also obviously bottom feeders as this was the highest they got off the bottom of the tank...anyone?

If I had to venture a guess, I'd say some type of sturgeon.

Edit: Looks like the Green Sturgeon to me.

Definitely a sturgeon, as to what type not sure. We fish for them here in Idaho. Can't keep them, just catch & release. But, what a trip when you catch one. They get huge.

This was the actual NY Aquarium out at Coney Island. Interesting choice for an aquarium fish...

I love that aqurarium!!!!
I've been going there ever since I can remember! Is that the same pengiun exibit that can be seen both above and below ground? Last time I checked it housed leaopard sharks and striped bass with the pengiuns. I never saw the sturgen, might be a new addition.

It was jam-packed with striped bass too, but no leopard sharks in there, just the sturgeon. You were able to check it out from both top and bottom, but it was pouring rain that day, so I didn't get to see nearly as many penguins as I'd like... I did get this guy catching a glance of me though...

Sturgeons. Ah. They can grow to be enormous.

Acipenser fulvescens, a North American native, can reach 1.9 metres.

Acipenser sturio (endangered) can reach 2.5 metres.

Acipenser rudiventris can reach 1.5 metres (and possibly a good deal more).

The grandaddy of them all is Huso huso, which can reach a whopping 6 metres and tip the scales (pardon the pun) at 3,700 Kg.

this page tells more about the giant Huso huso, which is reputed to be capable of reaching 10 metres by some scientists. Sadly, fishes that size are now extremely rare, because they have been fished almost to extinction for Beluga Caviar (sigh).

Well...to echo what everyone else said, they are Sturgeons. I worked at the NY Aquarium over the summer, and when people (especially kids) walked by the penguin exhibit they were taken aback (and a bit frightened by the fish). Sounds like you had fun there! Did you take a look at the seahorses? I spent hours everyday in the seahorse exhibit...
