I've been thinking of doing a salt water tank for sometime but I haven't quite decided to do it yet. I did have a few questions though. Is it possible to have a fish only system with no live rock and then add the live rock over time? If you were to have a fish only would you use live sand?

Thanks for any info,
Stella

A fish only tank is the most simple SW tank. You can use crushed coral, or sand for a substrate. You can use fake coral heads, or dead corals for decorations. A pair of powerheads, a heater, and a HOB filter and your all set.

Over time you can add a few pounds of live rock, then over time build it up. I would suggest adding 5 to 10 pounds at a time, then wait about a month before adding anything else.

It completly possible. All you have to do is when you add the live rock make sure its cured live rock.

I'm so excited now - I thought you had to have live rock to set up a saltwater tank -
What types of fish could I keep in a 55 gallon FO setup? I really like percula clowns but what else could go in?
Thanks again,
Stella

You could go with a watchman gobie, a royal gramma, or a flame angle. These are all smaller fish and shoudl do fine in your tank. You shoudl be able to get 4 or 5 smaller fish in a tank that size, but not much more then that.
