I was wondering about the particulars of a quarantine tank. Specifcaly: why are they so important, how long should a fish be kept in one, how close should the water parameters be to the parent tank, and can it be used as the hospital tank as well? TIA

A Qtank is used as a hospital tank as well. The reason is you simply don't know if a fish is sick when you buy it. So putting it in your Qtank for a few weeks will protect your main tank. I would say 2 to 4 weeks is a good amount of time. It's best to keep everything as close to the main tank as possible. Gravity, PH, temp, etc.

OK, thanks. Would you reccomend trading water back and forth when no one is sick after a few days of the carbon back in the hospital tank? Or... when I do a water change in the hospital, refil it with 2/3 big tank, 1/3 new? Or... should I just refill it with all new water and work harder to keep it as close as possible to the big tank? I know not to put hospital tank water it the big tank during treatment or quarantine.

I think it's best to use new water when doing a water change. That way your not adding nitrates to your Qtank.
