Alright I know some tangs are compatible and some are not. And a lot of time it depends on the temperament of the individual fish as much as the breed. Anyway. Friday I went to my LFS and noticed this cute little fish. I couldn't figure out what it was at first but it looked familiar.

Turns out it was a Juvenile Sail-fin tang. It looks like an adult but is less than an inch long. I have never seen one this small and could not comprehend it being a sailfin

Anyway. I WANT!!! It is so darn cute. The problem is I already have a Yellow Tang in my Reef and a Royal Blue in my FOWLR. Would there be any hope for the little guy?

Knowing both of your tanks are rather small anyways, I'd say theres not much chance.

One sites profile of the sailfin.

A 135 gallon or larger aquarium is necessary to provide plenty of swimming room. It is aggressive towards its own species and conspecifics at times, but peaceful towards other fish in the tank.

If not mistaken, your tanks are not this big.

Yellow tang.

It is aggressive towards its own species, or Tangs in general, and it is best to keep only one per tank.

Blue tang.

It is tolerant of other tangs, but can occasionally be aggressive towards other Blue Tangs.

I would say with the yellow, no. with the blue. The blue should not be a problem, but the sailfin may be a problem for the blue as it grows. The sailfin gets up to 15".

Someday I would like to find out who started the idea that you need a tank the size of Texas to host a Tang.

Anyway...

Tempted to get the little guy. Who knows. I may put him in with the blue on a probationary basis and see how they do.

I would be concerened about how tall this fish is. How big is your tank again? An active fish needs more space, and this fish looks like it needs a taller tank.

What does it's current size have to do with anything? You planning to upgrade your tanks? Or just remove the fish when it gets to big? consider it's adult size, not what it is right now.

Please quit talking down to me like you know everything and I am just starting with my tanks. It is getting tiresome and really makes me wish there was an ignore function on this board. There are people on this board who are extremely knowledgeable and helpful and then a few who know far less than they think and try to act important. It is sad that new people have to listen to the unknowledgeable people and not know better.

Ok, buy it then. You asked for opinions, and you got it. For an self apointed tang cop, you really need to follow your own advice. Enjoy your new fish.

I do not want to increase the tension in this thread but I will offer my opinion on the original question.

As I'm sure you know, Sailfin and Yellow Tangs are both Zebrasoma species and its recommended that you don't mix them together. The Sailfin is supposed to be the least aggressive of the species and the Yellow gets very aggressive.... as a result I wouldn't recommend this combination.

As for the Blue Tang, can you verify whether its an Atlantic Blue or a Pacific Blue Tang? For the Atlantic, I'd say no as it reaches 9" and can be very beligerent in smaller tanks so therefore needs a large one. The Pacific gets bigger than the Atlantic but is alot more peaceful given a large tank. I suppose in short I'm suggesting you house the Sailfin with the Pacific Blue (Regal Tang). I have a Yellow and Regal in my tank and they have never shown any signs of problems together.

I didn't say it wasn't aggressive, I said it was 'supposed to be the least aggressive' of the zebrasoma.

amilner,
Just curious, how big is the tank with the Yellow and Regal tangs.

Just my thoughts but, if the fish get along with everyone, and you are not overloading your tank, then what's wrong with getting the Juvenile Sail-fin?
Most tangs seem to swim in schools in the ocean, and if they are comfortable with one another in a tank, then where is the problem?

What AZZIZA should have mentioned is he is upgrading to a 220g tank.So the Sailfin should be no problem then.
Did I also mention that he is buying 2 220 tanks?
One for himself and one for me!WHAT A GUY!
