I have read that you do not NEED a protien skimmer for a 10 gallon. Is this true?

That will depend on who you ask. I would say no because you will be doing a lot of water changes. And the amount of money you will spend is not really worth the little work it will do.

The debate is just that, a debate. I ran a protein skimmer on a 10ga and it pulled out plenty of stuff.

If you want to use one, just but the $15 Coralife Super Skimmer 1 and a $5 Wal-Mart Air Pump.
