I think I've seen them in my tanks a few times. Do they look like a pulled apart cotton ball? I never figuered out what they were either.

I would say they are Vermatid snails........they live in a tube that is attached to rock and send out very fine mucus webs to capture food from the water column.

Is there a book or web site to learn more about them? (I prefer books) Are they harmful? If so, to what (fish, inverts, corals)? Do they reproduce rapidly or in abundance? If they are really good for tanks, should I help them thrive? What are thier natural preadators? How big do they get? Are you tired of my never-ending desire for knowledge yet?

Once again, thanks DRO!

I think I need to do research before I open my big trap!! The vermEtid (sp) snails that I saw on several websites had tubes that stuck out from the rock. Mine, whatever they are, lie flush with the rock. Is there a difference, or are they in the same family? If so, are they essentially the same critter with the same characteristics? My fingers are sore now, I'll read and post more t'morrow. g'night.

Ben, If they dont have the hard tube then they are most likely Spaghetti worms.

http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-06/rs/

There are alot of books out that have good hitchhiker/worm/snail/anything else you want to know, but they are usually expensive. I have a number of books that retail for $100 each, and they are not that big of books.

The internet and experience is where you will find alot of good information.

No luck. After reading the article twice then doing some on-line research of my own, I can definately say it is not a spaghetti worm, a fireworm, or a bristleworm. Vermetid worms are the closest thing to it (REAL close), but mine are flat on the rock as opposed to standing up. The whole hard tube of the worm is attached to the rock, as well. I will continue to search for the proper I. D. and I promise to inform everyone on it when found.
