I have two quick questions...

For a marine tank, if I choose to keep a Neon Goby do I have to also keep live rock?

Which fish would be good to keep in a marine tank without keeping live rock?

You don,t NEED live rock in a marine tank. Fish only tanks have as the name says, fish only. Live rock provides area for your benificial bactera and other things such as pods and worms to live, these all help the tank.

The only fish that really need lr is fish such as a mandarian that needs a constant pod supply for feeding.

Like fishguy mentioned, there are a select few fish that require the natural foods off the reef rock, like copepods and amphipods, and even mysid shrimp, etc. Mandarinfish and certain wrasse, like the 6 line, are heavy pod consumers, therefore not recommended for FO tanks.

My guess is most things you pick for your tank will probably be okay without live rock, thought I highly recommend getting at least a COUPLE pounds anyway. IMO, it looks good, and helps with biological filtration better than any filter can. It's more natural too.
