I looked in to it a while back, and decided agenst it. They can be a real problem. You will hardly see them. They can get out of the tank real easy. And can ink the water if startled which means doing a major water change. I found very few sites on them, and the ones I found had very little info. You can try doing a search on google, there may be a few more sites now.

Plus, they'll eat almost all other tank occupants. I wouldn't keep one unless you really wanted one.

Last but not least, they live obscenely short lives. The Giant Pacific Octopus only lives like five years, and the common small species you find will only live a year or two, which leaves a few months for them to live under your care.

I wrote a big article on this subject before the board was archived. I suspect my big articles were one of the reasons the board needed archiving

Oh, and an additional tip. If you *do* decide to keep an octopus, be careful about species choice. Do NOT keep the Blue Ring Octopus (Hapalochlaena maculosa) as it produces a venom which is lethal to humans!

Oooh, definitely. That octopus is one of the most venemous animals under the sea. They look very nice, and they're small enough to keep in an average tank, but they produce a killer nerve toxin.

I year life span is quite an achievement in aquaria. In captivity, at least the like of which we use in our homes, they usually only live about 7 months.
