I recently inherited some marine fish from relatives who are moving and can't take their tank. One of the fish is a yellow tang, about 5 years old, that's so faded that it looks more white than yellow.

The LFS clerk told me that's due to a poor diet, and I do know that its previous owner was feeding only flake food.

What foods would help to bring its color back?

Seaweed/algae should be a tangs staple diet. You can buy cheaper seaweed from an oriental store labled as Nori. Nori is just seaweed that is used for sushi....just make sure you dont get any that has flavoring/spices added to it.

Algae should be available to the tang at all times, or atleast the majority of the day. This can be accomplished by using a veggie clip to hold it, or an algae magnet also works well for this

There is nothing wrong with the tang eating other foods though, algae just needs to be a HUGE part of their diet.

Thanks! You're probably right that stress had something to do with it, too -- I don't think the tank it was in had anything in the way of decorations except a couple of pieces of fake coral, so I'm sure it didn't feel very safe.
