my soon to be reef tank has been up and running for about 2 weeks and ive noticed that the rocks and glass are becoming covered in a grass like macro algae! is this a good/bad sign? should i buy a snail or something that will eat the algae? im worried that if i attempt to remove it all "theres alot" the die off could cause a ammonia/foul water spike!
any help would be appreciated!
cheers

Sounds like hair algea. You may have high phosphates in your water. You can remove it, but might want to get something to control it. You should also start using RO/DI water.

ive allready got ro/di water, its green and looks plant like, is that similar to hair algae? also the algae is seperate and not like a matt covering the glass and rocks its more like hundreds of tiny dots.

Is it only 1-2 mm long? If so I get the same stuff at the earl,y stages of my tanks. It is only really noticeable when it picks up all the dust in the water. And it generally goes away quickly.

Some red leg hermits and some blue leg hermits should mow it off the rock. Some trochus snails should take care of the glass. At least these are the ones that did the job in my tank! A Lawm mower blenny does a good job but I traded mine in for somethning with more color when the job was done.
