i just got new live rock a week ago and i heard from someone that it is good to get a damsel fish to cycle ur water

is this true?

when will i beable to get my shrimp, snails and fish, for its safe for them to live?

i heard u have to wait a mounth before getting fish, but at the place that i got it from, the guy takes his live rocks and puts it in his own aquarium at home, then he sales them. Does that mean the life rock is safe right when i buy it?

thanx alot for the help....

Do you know about cylcing? If not you should read marine tank

you can cycle a saltwater tank just using live rock. There is no need for a fish in there too. Be sure to READ READ READ everything you can get your eyes on!

I would suggest testing your water. When ammonia drops to zero, and nitrItes drop to zero, it should be safe. You will get a slight increase in nirtAtes, but a water change will help with this. And if you have a good sand bed, the nitrates will drop on there own.

I would also suggest adding fish slowly, one at a time, and wait a month or so.

From what I understood about Live Rocks, they come in 3 "forms" : cured, half-cured and not cured at all. A fully cured rock is a dead rock and will not help you cycle the tank. A half-cured or "raw" rock will, but will create ammonia and nitrites spikes, thus making it possible to cycle your tank with only live rocks in it.

You can also cycle your tank with a few Damsels as they are quite tolerant and sturdy lil' critters. They are very forgiving fish for the novice ( I'm being one of them ). I just started my first marine tank a few days ago with 4 damsels.

Check this thread for more info :

So far, so good !
