I would like to know how a protein skimmer works. The people at the lfs tell me I need one for my sw tank. When I buy the skimmer do I need anything else. I have a 29 gallon with a power filter, 15 pounds live rock, and 15 pounds of crushed coral. What is a sump? Any info would help a lot.

What else you need depends upon that brand and model skimmer
you purchase. Some are complete as you buy them and others
require an airstone and pump, or a water pump etc.

As for your sexond question a sump is basically a second holding tank under the main tank, which is generally used for filtration and hardware, heres a link with good reading.
