It's a bit more work, and the amount of money is determind by the type of tank you want. A fish only tank is the lowest cost. The only real difference is the cost of the salt, and the cost of the fish. A FOWLR tank will cost more because of the cost of the live rock. A reef tank will cost a lot because of the lighting, live rock, corals, and other equipment needed.

Is it worth the time and money? Yes, I spend much more time watching my SW tanks then I do watching my FW tank.

Ditto. (only replace the words "tank" with "tanks" )

Not to stray too far off topic, but what other answer did you expect whence posting on the salty forum?

Anyways, I say, if you're worried about money, go for a little ten to thirty gallon mini reef.

yes...yes...posting such qz in a saltwater fan fourm you would expect 99% "yes"....

If your qz is "is it worth the work for SW while I can just have a FW instead" then my answer is a yes. But if you are saying "is it worth to have a SW tank" then I guess you just have to try it yourself.

Is it worth it? NO .....Not if you have to ask that question.you should already know if it's worth it if you keep FW.You get the same reward for your efforts if not more since the exotic things you can keep in SW.
Like DTHURS said the only diff is the salt and the fish for a fish only setup. But that being said you will catch the bug if you try one and then soon will be headed on a quest for a reef tank!

it's true...i always wanted to keep a SW tank but was afraid of the cost of everything...so i decided on converting my 20g to a tank w/ just shrimps and crabs...next thing u know i'm buying live rock, more pc lights and getting ready to set it up as a reef tank...g/f helped me buy a 30g tank and stand to have a lil more room for everything..i'd go for bigger but that's all i can fit in my room right now...every time i go downstairs and watch my 80g FW tank, i keep trying to picture what it would look like as a reef tank...but i have to admit that this 30g SW is costing the same if not more than my 80g FW setup...will b a lot more once i start buying corals

As most things in this life, it's worth it so long as you're enjoying yourself..

In the beginning, it was exciting to try something new.. FW has been my hobby since I was a little girl, so the thought of SW was always in my head as something that would be tried "LATER".. When "later" finally turned into "now", it was an incredible rush..

When you start hitting bumps with issues you aren't sure how to handle, or you lose your first expensive purchase ~ stuff ain't so rosey any more.. But if you stick with it you'll find that it's still worth it, if it's what you want..

Just be prepared for the downward spiral that is SW keeping.. Once you decide that this is really what you'd like to do, you start buying stuff like refractometers and RODI systems.. Your friends ask why you smell like seaweed all the time and you'll never be able to afford a new car again in your life..

Absolutley not who would like bright colorful fish with personalities . Just kidding I say go for it. It can't be much different than FW except less fish and the whole salt thing. If you concerned about cost setup a fish only set up and slowly add live rock.
