i just got five blue-legged hermit crabs. they're the first animals going in my tank (aside from anything that hitched a ride on the live rock).

do i need to feed them?

You certainly can if you're worried about them not getting enough food. If your live rock has cycled, there should be plenty of tiny critters for the hermits to eat. If not, then I don't know whether there would be enough grub. Probably so, but there's no harm in feeding a little bit to ease your conscience.

How much rock do you have in your tank? Generally there shoudl be enough for them. But you can add some flakes, they will sink to the bottom and the crabs will eat it.

thanks.

i have about 10lbs of live rock in a 10G aquarium. it's been in there for about 3 weeks, and there are little creepy crawlies on it when i look really close, so i guess there is a bit for them to eat. but, i think i may add some flakes now and then just to be sure.

another stupid question: does it have to be marine flakes? because i don't have any fish yet, i haven't bought any food, but i have freshwater flakes for my other tanks. could i feed this to them in the meantime? ie: i don't want to buy marine flakes if the fish i end up getting won't eat them

I think I would use marine flakes. Many fish eat flakes, damsels, clowns, tangs. For the most part any fish you add to a tank that size will eat flakes.

If you squeeze a silverside or a krill until it sinks to the bottom, they'll all come out and scavenge on it.

If you want to, sure. I doubt that they would have a problem with either.

They'll eat anything really, just be careful. Dont put in so much food that it clouds and contaminates your water. Excess food can leach phosphates and contribute to algae growth. Dont let food rot. If they dont eat it, take it out.
