i have a 55 gal fish only tank and im wondering at what levels or readings of nitrate i should consider doing my water changes before the concentration of nitrate becomes toxic or too high for my salt water fishes?

Nitrate levels in FO tanks can be higher. I would say your safe at 20. If you get around 50 it would be a good idea to do a water change. Lower is better, but it's not as big of a concern.
