IMO sand is better. i have used sand and crushed coral but the sand looks better. it will also help as a biological filter. crushed coral dosent have all of these abilities and looks nowhere as nice.. just my honest opinion.

Sand is your better choice. If you can get a small amount of crushed coral, you can sprinkle it over the sand to give a nice natural apperence.

I like deep sand beds, strictly from aragonite sand. This helps to buffer the pH, where as a silica based sand wont. DSB's are a natural way of helping to reduce nitrates.

Crushed coral is usually better for fish only displays, or for tanks with a heavy bioload. Unlike sand, it needs to be gravel vac'd.

I guess your decision would be based on the purpose of the tank you're setting up. HTH
