Well...I work at my LFS and I basically agree with the first half of what Mikey said. They aren't much popular now than before, in fact, most of the time people dont even REALIZE that the Moorish Idol was in fact in Finding Nemo, nobody recognizes him, they all recognize "Nemo and Dori" for the most part.

Moorish Idols aren't the easiest fish to take care of either, def. not a beginners fish, and def. not for smaller tanks. We've had trouble feeding ours at work; our last batch would only eat fresh clams. Most of the time they dont make it b/c of nutrional reasons, at least IME. In addition, I think they do better in at least a trio. I never encourage someone to get "just one..."

They can be very pretty though, not my personal favorite or anything, but a nice fish none the less.

I'm sure no more people are buying Moorish Idols now than before. It's always been a fish that was frequently, but rarely properly cared for.

There are a number of people that keep them. They are just incredibly demanding for various reasons.

Seeing how were on the topic and my son is watching Finding Nemo for about the 150th time, I wonder why the movie decided to use a Moorish Idol in the dentist tank. Now, being into sociology, I know that once a movie like this comes out, it suddenly becomes "cool" to have a saltwater tank (I have to include myself with this). But why the Moorish Idol? They are impossible to keep in a closed system. All I keep thinking is how many of these poor fish are being killed because of the movie.

By the way, I still love the film even though its been overplayed.

Ok i`m setting up a Sw "Nemo tank" for my grandson (6 yrs old ).I have Nemo ,the dart fish and Sebastian the shrimp. Was Sebastian a Coral Banded shrimp? I`m also explaining how the dentist was so wrong with his choice of fish and why Dora can`t fit in our 30 gal high tank.

Kitten I was going to suggest that too, I've done it before.

And for the record, now that you're white on black and in SW land you look like Nate.

The extras at the end of the movie explain all about the drawing of the characters and the reef scenes, etc.

*sends Oleta her spare copy*

If you've got the DVD of the movie, watch some of the extras... there's like, character explanations for most of the main characters, and it tells you the species, etc. Quite interesting, actually.
