In stead.. i was thinking i could add some ADFs a apple snail or 2.. or 3, and a trio of guppies. my betta isnt TO aggressive, he has a adf buddy who floats around all the time and he doesnt go for him. he is also getting pretty old. if not guppies what else could i use? tank is heavily planted. thanks! |

Joe Potato Fish Addict Kind of a Big Deal Posts: 869 Votes: 309 Registered: 09-Jan-2001 | I'd say no to the guppies just because with all the long fins on the fancy varieties, a betta will sometimes mistake it for another betta and beat the snot out of the guppy. If you're looking for a livebearer, a platy or two would work, or some mosquito fish. I can't comment on the apple snail or ADFs because I've never kept either of them. |

In a smaller tank with no space to get away guppies tails will get all torn up. Bettas dont like fish that resemble them in any way. 1-3 ADFS or 1 apple snail, and maybe a group of small fish, like white cloud minnows (6) or harlequin or lambchop rasbora (6), or neon tetra (6), this should be fine in your tank. I have Cardinal Tetras in my Betta tank as I believe they are hardier than the Neons. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Contrary to popular myth, the male won't outright kill her, but he may hound and stress her and throw in a few decent body bites, which will be enough to let infection take hold in that state. It would be the same end result, just slower. Be prepared to extract her (or him, if she's beaten the tripe out of him) Keep an eye on her, provide hiding places for him and her with both entry and exit points (nothing that could end up trapping them) and keep that water pristine. Do not let the temperature drop below 79*F, and be careful if you do a cold WC as it simulates rain. If you can plant the tank, do. Hornwort, java moss, whatever you can do to provide visual blocks and spots to relax. Given the situation, assuming that you don't want to breed, I'd go get 3 gravid female guppies (as boring as you can, given that you don't want him getting his groove on) and toss them in. The fry may not last, but a little bit of distraction in such a tank would probably do both bettas a favour. I'm not saying that it can't work, it might well be OK (for a few days, for a while, forever, it depends on the fish) but for something that is generally regarded as taboo, it isn't the most ideal of situations to be trying it in IMO. |

I dont expect she will live very long with a male in the tank. Id highly suggest getting a divider if you plan to keep this ...once he gets used to her and sees her as mate, she will be in trouble. Thats something Id never do myself. Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

viciouschiapet Fish Addict Posts: 651 Kudos: 77 Votes: 15 Registered: 25-Jan-2003 | If you are particularly lucky and happened to get two very non-aggressive bettas, you could probably be just fine. Some bettas really just aren't as ready for a fight as others and i've had both before. I still wouldn't try male and male... but i guess just keep an eye on them and if it doesn't work out, at least there are a ton of 10g tank dividers! The pottery that growls! |

Amac Small Fry Posts: 1 Kudos: 0 Votes: 0 Registered: 27-Aug-2007 | sorry... just set up my first tank and don't know too much. what is ADF? I too am looking for something to put in with my beta... although he's only in a 2.5 gallon tank. I've got a 29 gallon with 5 tiger barbs and 5 tetras (don't know the name... just that they are about the same size and shape as the tiger barbs) one guppy and an algae eater... they all seem to get along fine so I'm going to leave that tank alone for now. But I feel bad for the betta being all alone. EDIT: haha, now I get the lines around ADF and it tells me it's an African Dwarf Frog. |

Since yours is in a 2.5 gallon I wouldnt suggest much else. Do you have live plants growing in it? It'll give the betta something to play in and you a bit of a challange. As for livestock for the tank, some of the smaller shrimp would be a possiblity or a snail. An ADF may work (be sure you don't get an ACF by mistake or you'll end up with no betta) but it all depends on the nature of the betta. I've had ones that attacked anything and everything that went in their domain. ^_^ |
