I am about to "inherit" a 110 gallon freshwater tank and am wondering if you people think it would be ok on the second floor of my house? It is a 5ft. by 1 1/2ft. tank and would rest perpendicular over 4 joists near a main beam. (within 2 feet)

That would be in round figures 900lb not including all the extras eg rocks, base, and the stand.

Even though it could sound safe I would get it checked out first. Also check with the insurance company re any special risks policy required.

I have been told that the weight would be anywhere from 1400 to 1900lbs complete. Is that not right?

the tank is 880 pounds with just water.

So lets go with 900 pounds including the glass.

You will need about 75 - 100 pounds of gravel (for a moderate layer)

ANd depending on rocks, ect, lets add another 50 pounds.

In all, it will be around 1100 pounds.

If it is near a main beam, i would say it was ok, another support factor is if it is going up against an outside wall, which will make it even more stronger.

Tip.

If your aquarium is on one of those traditional metal stands with the four legs at the corners, then find a large, flat piece of wood big enough for the stand to rest upon. You can paint it or varnish it to make it a decorative feature if you wish. The reason for siting your tank upon this is simple. The flat piece of wood will spread the load somewhat across the joists.

Even so, I would try and enlist the assistance of someone with professional skills in this area beforehand, to make sure that the floor will support the weight. Last thing you want is half a ton of aquarium migrating downstairs and unleashing all kinds of havoc in the process.
