You read it right. I am making yet another tank. This time its a 2 foot tank that I plan to use as a softwater tank. The dimensions are 24"x12"x12" which is around 15gal.

I was thinking for fish selection, 2 rams, 6 cardinal tetras.
Would these be ok in a tank that size.

For plants I was thinking vallisneria. And also some flat rocks that the rams cans use for spawning. The tank will have a sand substrate. I am picking the stuff up tomorrow off a friend as I am getting the tank for free so I will post what the filter and heater are etc.

In a newly setup tank, those are probably the last fish you want to start off with.

Are you planting to seed the tank with another?

Hi,
Actually, if this is a true "soft water" tank, then Val
is not the plant for it. Val requires Calcium (Ca) for
growth and should be planted in tanks that have some
"hardness" (Mg & Ca) in the water.

Tetra- What fish would you recomend for seeding the tank? I have some white clouds that I could put in there. Would they do the job?

FRANK- What plants would you recommend for a softwater tank? Is amazon sword leaf ok?

What I was referring to is using the filter and alot of the gravel and gunk from an established tank. This will give you a big headstart on developing the biological filter.

I still wouldn't go with those fish for quite some time. Also the german/blue rams are extremely difficult to keep long-term. Bolivians would be a much better choice.

Hi,
Using the vals depends upon how "soft" the water is.
It seems that if the water that is at least 3
degrees hardness it probably contains enough Ca and Mg.
Here is a site that lists plants for a Discus tank where
the water is 3dgh:

[link=http://www.azgardens.com/habitats_discus.php]http://www.azgardens.com/habitats_discus.php" style="COLOR: #FF00FF[/link]

You can either purchase them from AZGardens or you could
write down the plant names and look for them elsewhere.
They also have a South American Habitat listed as well.

2 Rams & 6 Cardinal Tetras would be fine in a 2 foot tank.

Not in a newly established 2 foot tank. That would be a death trap.

I was thinking of adding 3 cardinals one week, another 3 the next week and the rams the week after that. I got a whole load of plants today and a bit piece of driftwood.

The cycling white clouds...
